If we go into a recession, there will be plenty of Americans looking for work without having to compete with people who plan to take their earnings and abscond to the foreign country from whence they came and in which the cost of living/retirement is much lower.
I wrote this letter to my congresscritter, I suggest you do the same:
Good afternoon, I just wanted to plead the case that we should not be letting in more foreigners via the H1B visa program to displace American workers. The idea that there is a shortage of IT workers is a myth perpetuated by high tech companies looking to undercut Americans for chearper sources of foreign IT work. The IT business is cyclical in nature. Sometimes there is great demand, other times the unemployment lines are filled with out of work IT people. Many companies use the "up" times, when there is a *TEMPORARY* shortage of IT workers as an excuse to claim that ther is an overall shortage. This is one case where the free market definitely should be allowed to work. If a temporary shortage if IT workers were allowed to drive IT wages up slightly, it would have the side benefit of encouraging more young Americans to join this field. Plus, then we might be able to afford to buy some of this overpriced real estate that is causing so many problems these days. Please don't sell us out. We will remember it come election time. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
